Dental treatment can represent a significant investment, particularly for larger procedures like implants or veneers. One of the most common questions we hear at Ivy Dental is not about the treatment itself but about how to manage the cost.
This guide covers the payment options available at our Brisbane clinics, including health fund claims, government schemes, payment plans, and less commonly known pathways like superannuation release.
Health fund claims with HICAPS
If you hold private health insurance with extras cover, you may be entitled to a rebate on many dental procedures. The amount depends on your fund, your level of cover, and the specific treatment.
At Ivy Dental, we process health fund claims on-site using HICAPS at our Everton Park and Nundah clinics. This means your rebate is applied at the time of your appointment, and you only pay the gap.
A few things worth knowing about health fund cover in Brisbane:
- Preventive and general treatments (check-ups, cleans, fillings) are usually covered under basic extras, though annual limits apply.
- Major dental (crowns, implants, bridges, veneers) typically requires a higher level of extras cover and often has a 12-month waiting period.
- Orthodontic cover (aligners, braces) is usually a separate category with its own limits and waiting periods.
- Annual limits reset on a date set by your fund, not necessarily on 1 January. Check your policy to avoid leaving benefits unused.
We accept all major health funds. If you are unsure what your fund covers, bring your card to your appointment and we can run a pre-estimate before treatment begins.
Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a federal government program that provides up to $1,158 in dental benefits over a two-year period for eligible children aged 0 to 17.
CDBS covers basic dental services including examinations, X-rays, cleaning, fissure seals, fillings, root canal treatment, and extractions.
Eligibility is determined by Medicare and is linked to receipt of certain government payments (such as Family Tax Benefit Part A). Not all children qualify, but many Brisbane families are eligible without realising it. We can check your child's eligibility at reception when you arrive.
At Ivy Dental, we bulk bill CDBS-covered items directly to Medicare. There is $0 out of pocket while the planned items are covered by the remaining Medicare balance. This applies at our Everton Park and Nundah clinics.
If your child has not been to the dentist recently, a CDBS-covered check-up and clean is a straightforward way to start.

Payment plans for larger treatments
For treatments where the total cost is higher -- such as multiple implants, multiple veneers, or complex restorative work -- paying the full amount upfront is not always practical.
Ivy Dental offers payment plan options through third-party providers. These plans allow you to spread the cost of treatment over a defined period.
Important details:
- Payment plans may be available to approved applicants. Approval is subject to the provider's credit assessment.
- Interest and fees vary depending on the plan and provider. Your treatment coordinator will outline the specific terms before you commit.
- Plans can typically be arranged for treatments from a minimum threshold amount.
- You can apply before or at the time of your consultation, so you know your options before making a treatment decision.
Across Brisbane, payment plan availability varies between practices. Some offer in-house arrangements, others use external providers, and terms differ. We recommend asking any practice you are considering for a clear breakdown of the plan structure, total repayable amount, and any fees before proceeding.
Superannuation release for dental treatment
This is a less commonly discussed option, but it can be relevant for patients facing significant dental costs they cannot otherwise afford.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) allows early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds for medical and dental treatment. To qualify, you generally need to demonstrate that:
- The treatment is necessary and not purely cosmetic.
- You cannot afford the treatment through other means.
- A registered dental practitioner provides supporting documentation.
The application is made directly through the ATO (via myGov), not through your dentist. However, your dentist will need to provide a treatment plan and cost estimate as part of the supporting documentation.
This pathway is not quick. Processing times can take several weeks, and approval is not automatic. It is worth exploring early if you are considering larger implant or restorative treatment and cost is a barrier.
Your treatment coordinator at Ivy can help prepare the clinical documentation if you choose to apply.
Combining payment options
In practice, many patients at our Brisbane clinics use a combination of approaches. A common pattern for a larger treatment might look like this:
- Health fund rebate applied at the time of each appointment via HICAPS.
- Payment plan for the remaining gap, spread over several months.
- Staging treatment across multiple appointments where clinically appropriate, so costs are spread across health fund benefit periods.
Your treatment coordinator will walk through the numbers with you before any treatment begins. You will receive an itemised quote that shows the estimated health fund rebate, the expected gap, and whether payment plan options may be available for that gap.

What to ask at your consultation
If you are comparing dental practices in Brisbane and cost management matters to you, these questions are worth asking at any consultation:
- What is the total treatment cost, itemised by procedure?
- What will my health fund rebate cover, and what is the expected gap?
- Are payment plans available, and what are the total fees including interest?
- Can the treatment be staged across multiple benefit periods?
- Is CDBS bulk billing available for my children?
At Ivy Dental, we aim to answer all of these at your first appointment. No surprises after the fact.
Brisbane-specific considerations
Brisbane dental pricing varies by area, practice type, and the technology used. Practices in the CBD and inner suburbs may price differently to those in outer suburbs. Practices with in-house labs and digital workflows (like Ivy Dental) can sometimes reduce costs on certain procedures by avoiding external laboratory fees and reducing the number of appointments required.
North Brisbane families in suburbs like Everton Park, Mitchelton, Stafford, and Nundah can choose between our Everton Park and Nundah clinics, which can make scheduling easier when coordinating general dentistry for the whole family alongside larger cosmetic or restorative work.
If cost is a factor in your decision, the first step is always a consultation with a clear quote. Everything else follows from there. Book a consultation, or call (07) 3266 7120.
