Choose the safest next step

What needs to happen now?

This is general guidance, not a diagnosis. The first decision is whether the problem needs hospital care or urgent dental care.

Hospital emergency

Call 000 or go to an emergency department.

Trouble breathing, talking or swallowing, heavy bleeding, major swelling of the mouth or tongue, and serious facial trauma need urgent hospital assessment.

Call 000

Time-sensitive tooth

Knocked-out adult tooth

Handle it by the crown, not the root. If it cannot be returned safely to the socket, keep it moist in cold milk and aim for dental assessment within 30 minutes.

Book online at any time. During opening hours, call before travelling if you want immediate guidance or help choosing the clinic.

What happens next

First, find the cause. Then decide what follows.

The urgent visit focuses on the problem that brought you in. Definitive treatment may begin then, or be planned once the immediate concern is stable.

  1. 01

    Tell us what happened

Share where the pain is and whether swelling, damage or trauma is present. This helps the team understand the immediate concern.

  2. 02

    Assess the urgent problem

A dentist examines the area and may recommend an X-ray when it is needed to understand the cause.

  3. 03

    Relieve or plan

Care may begin at that visit, or we will explain the safest next step, expected fees and any follow-up or referral required.

Your urgent appointment

What we assess

Find the source of pain, swelling or damage.

A focused examination comes first. An X-ray may be recommended when it is needed to understand the problem.

The next step

Relieve, protect or make a clear plan.

Care may relieve pain, protect a tooth, manage infection, repair damage, or arrange the right follow-up or referral.

Common questions

Emergency dental questions.

These answers are general. Book online at any time, or call during opening hours if you want guidance before travelling.

Should I book online or call?
You can book an emergency appointment online at any time. During opening hours, call (07) 3266 7120 if you want phone guidance before travelling. The page will show "Leave a message" when the clinics are closed.
How much does an emergency appointment cost?
An emergency examination starts from $180. Imaging and treatment are charged separately when needed. We explain expected fees before care proceeds and can process eligible health fund claims through HICAPS.
What if the clinics are closed?
Book an emergency appointment online, then leave a message if you need to. The team will respond when the clinics reopen. For trouble breathing, talking or swallowing, heavy bleeding, major mouth or tongue swelling, or serious facial trauma, call 000 or go to a hospital emergency department.
Will I be seen the same day?
We prioritise by urgency and make room for emergency appointments around clinic capacity where possible. Book online at any time, or call (07) 3266 7120 during opening hours so the team can give you a realistic timeframe.
Should I go to hospital or a dentist?
A dentist is usually the right first contact for isolated tooth pain, swelling or a broken tooth. Call 000 or attend a hospital emergency department for trouble breathing, talking or swallowing, heavy bleeding, major mouth or tongue swelling, serious facial trauma, or another life-threatening concern.
Can I manage pain before my appointment?
Use over-the-counter pain relief only as directed on the packaging and only if it is safe for you. A cold compress outside the cheek may help with swelling. Do not place tablets directly on the gums.
Can I see an emergency dentist on weekends?
Everton Park and Nundah are open 7 days. Weekend hours are 9am to 5pm. Book online at any time, or call during opening hours for help with availability.
