What a same-day crown is
A same-day crown (sometimes called a CEREC crown or chairside crown) is designed and milled in the dental practice during a single appointment. The dentist takes a digital scan of the prepared tooth, designs the crown on screen, and mills it from a solid block of ceramic using an in-practice milling unit.
The advantage is convenience. One appointment, no temporary crown, no waiting period. For posterior teeth (molars and premolars) where aesthetics are less critical and strength is the priority, same-day crowns can work very well.
What a lab-made crown is
A lab-made crown is fabricated by a dental ceramist in a laboratory, typically over one to two weeks. The process involves taking impressions or digital scans, sending them to the lab, and having the ceramist build the crown by hand using layered porcelain or pressed ceramic techniques.
The advantage is customisation. A skilled ceramist can layer different shades of porcelain to match the translucency, colour gradients, and surface texture of natural teeth in a way that milled blocks cannot replicate. For front teeth and cases where the crown needs to blend invisibly with adjacent natural teeth, lab-made crowns generally offer a closer aesthetic match.
The trade-off is time. You will need a temporary crown for one to two weeks while the lab fabricates the final restoration, and a second appointment to fit it.
When each may be preferred
Same-day may be preferred when:
- The crown is on a back tooth where aesthetics are less critical
- You want to avoid a temporary crown and a second appointment
- The case is straightforward with no complex colour matching needed
- Time is a factor
Lab-made may be preferred when:
- The crown is on a front tooth or in the visible smile zone
- Precise colour matching to adjacent natural teeth is important
- The case involves complex aesthetics (heavy translucency, characterisation, unusual shade)
- Multiple crowns are being made and need to match each other and the surrounding teeth
What affects durability and fit
Both types of crown can be durable when properly made and properly fitted. The material, the fit of the margins, the bite adjustment, and the patient's habits (grinding, clenching, diet) all affect longevity more than the fabrication method.
Zirconia crowns (available through both methods) are among the strongest. Layered porcelain crowns (typically lab-made) offer the strong aesthetics but are slightly less resistant to fracture on high-load teeth. E.max lithium disilicate sits between the two, offering a good balance of strength and appearance.

Timeline comparison
Same-day crowns are completed in a single appointment of approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours. You leave with the final crown in place, no temporary needed.
