Dental Bridge vs Implant: Cost and Longevity

Comparing dental bridges and implants on cost, lifespan, procedure, and suitability. Brisbane pricing and honest guidance.

Two Good Options. Different Trade-Offs.

If you are missing a tooth, you have likely been told about two main fixed replacement options: a dental bridge and a dental implant. Both restore function, appearance, and bite stability. Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on your clinical situation, your budget, your timeline, and your long-term priorities.

This guide compares the two options on the factors that matter most: cost, longevity, procedure, maintenance, and suitability.

How Each Option Works

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge uses the teeth on either side of the gap as anchors. These anchor teeth (abutments) are prepared by removing a layer of enamel, and crowns are fitted over them. A false tooth (pontic) sits between the two crowns, filling the gap.

A standard three-unit bridge replaces one missing tooth using two adjacent teeth as supports. The bridge is cemented in place permanently and does not need to be removed.

Dental Implant

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone. Over a period of typically 3 to 6 months, the bone integrates around the implant (a process called osseointegration). Once integrated, an abutment and crown are attached to the implant, creating a standalone replacement tooth.

The implant replaces the tooth root as well as the visible crown, which means adjacent teeth are not affected.

Cost Comparison in Brisbane

Bridge Costs

A three-unit porcelain bridge in Brisbane typically starts from $3,000 to $5,000. The cost depends on the materials used (zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or full ceramic) and whether any preparatory work is needed on the abutment teeth.

Individual crowns at Ivy Dental start from $1,600 per tooth. A three-unit bridge involves three connected crowns.

Implant Costs

A single dental implant (including the implant post, abutment, and crown) typically starts from $4,500 to $6,500 in Brisbane. For a detailed breakdown, see our guide on dental implant costs in Brisbane.

Additional costs may apply if bone grafting, sinus lifting, or CT imaging is required before implant placement. These are assessed at consultation.

Health Fund Rebates

Both bridges and implants may attract partial rebates under Major Dental extras cover. Rebates vary by fund and policy level. Implants are not covered by all policies, and some funds have specific exclusion clauses for implant components.

We process all claims on-site via HICAPS. Payment plans may be available to approved applicants for either option.

Longevity: How Long Each Option Lasts

Bridge Lifespan

A well-made dental bridge, maintained with good oral hygiene and regular dental reviews, can last 5 to 15 years. Some last longer. The most common reasons for bridge failure are decay in the abutment teeth, fracture of the framework or porcelain, and loss of cementation.

The abutment teeth bear additional load from the missing tooth, which can increase their risk of problems over time.

Implant Lifespan

The implant post itself (the titanium component in the bone) can last decades. Many implants placed in the 1980s and 1990s are still functioning. The crown on top of the implant may need replacement after 10 to 20 years due to normal wear, but the implant itself typically remains stable.

Implant success depends on bone quality, oral hygiene, smoking status, and overall health. Implant failure can occur, particularly in the early healing phase, but success rates in the published literature are generally reported above 95% over 10 years.

Procedure Comparison

Bridge Timeline

A dental bridge typically requires two to three appointments over two to three weeks. The abutment teeth are prepared at the first visit, impressions are taken, and a temporary bridge is placed. The permanent bridge is fitted at a subsequent appointment.

At Ivy Dental, some bridges can be completed faster using our in-house ceramic milling technology.

Implant Timeline

The implant process takes longer. After the implant post is placed surgically, a healing period of 3 to 6 months is typical before the final crown can be attached. Some cases require preparatory procedures (such as bone grafting) that add additional months.

Total treatment time from consultation to final crown is typically 4 to 9 months. For a detailed walkthrough, see our implant process guide.

When a Bridge May Be the Better Choice

  • You need the gap filled quickly (weeks rather than months).
  • The teeth on either side of the gap already have large fillings or crowns and would benefit from being crowned regardless.
  • You have medical conditions or take medications that make implant surgery higher risk.
  • Budget is a primary concern and you need the lower upfront cost.
  • There is insufficient bone for implant placement and you prefer not to undergo grafting.

For a deeper comparison of bridge-specific scenarios, see our guide on when a bridge is better than an implant.

When an Implant May Be the Better Choice

  • The teeth adjacent to the gap are healthy and unrestored. A bridge requires preparation of these teeth, which removes healthy tooth structure.
  • You want the longest-lasting option and are planning for decades of use.
  • You want to preserve jawbone in the area of the missing tooth. Bone tends to resorb over time in areas where teeth are missing, and implants help maintain bone volume.
  • You are missing a single back tooth where adjacent teeth are strong and healthy.
  • You prefer a standalone restoration that does not depend on neighbouring teeth.

Maintenance and Care

Bridge Care

Bridges require specific cleaning under the pontic (the false tooth). A floss threader or interdental brush is needed to clean beneath the bridge where food and plaque can accumulate. Neglecting this area can lead to decay in the abutment teeth, which is the most common cause of bridge failure.

Implant Care

Implants are cleaned like natural teeth: brushing, flossing, and regular professional cleans. The area around the implant where it meets the gum needs careful cleaning to prevent peri-implant inflammation (a condition similar to gum disease around natural teeth).

Both options require six-monthly dental check-ups to monitor the restoration and surrounding tissues.

Choosing Between a Bridge and an Implant

A bridge is faster and has a lower upfront cost. An implant is a longer-term investment that does not require alteration of adjacent teeth and typically lasts longer.

Neither is the wrong choice. The right choice is the one that fits your clinical situation, your priorities, and your budget. A consultation that includes X-rays and a thorough examination is the most reliable way to determine which option is appropriate for you.
