When comparing private practices, the key questions for students are:

If you have extras cover through a private health fund, preventive dental (check-ups, cleans, X-rays) typically attracts a rebate. The amount depends on your fund and level of cover. Using a practice with HICAPS means the rebate is processed on the spot.

International students on OSHC should check their policy carefully. Many standard OSHC plans do not include dental cover, or include only emergency dental. If your OSHC does not cover dental, you will pay the full fee at a private practice. Some students add a separate extras policy through an Australian health fund to access dental rebates.

For students eligible under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, up to $1,158 in dental services may be covered over a two-year period for patients aged 0 to 17. This is federally funded and does not require private health insurance.

Why students avoid the dentist (and why it costs more later)

The pattern is predictable. A student arrives at university with healthy teeth. They skip check-ups for two or three years because of cost, inconvenience, or not getting around to it.
