Implants may be used to support a removable overdenture or a fixed bridge. They can improve retention in suitable cases, but they do not guarantee a particular biting force, comfort level, speech result, or freedom from movement or maintenance.

Two Types of Implant-Supported Dentures
Removable Overdentures (Snap-On Dentures)
A removable overdenture clips onto implants using small attachments (locators or ball attachments). You snap the denture in during the day and remove it at night for cleaning.
Typically requires 2 to 4 implants per arch. Two implants in the lower jaw can significantly improve retention for a lower denture, which is the arch most patients struggle with.
Advantages:
- Fewer implants needed (lower cost than fixed options)
- Easier to clean (you remove it)
- Can often be retrofitted to an existing denture

Considerations:

Fixed Implant Bridges (All-on-4 / All-on-6)
A fixed bridge is screwed onto 4 to 6 implants and is not removed by the patient. It stays in your mouth 24/7. Only your dentist removes it for periodic professional cleaning.

A fixed bridge and a removable overdenture have different cleaning, repair, surgical, cost, space, and maintenance implications. Preference alone does not determine suitability; the prosthetic space, bone, bite, dexterity, health, and risk profile all matter.

Who Is a Candidate?
Some patients who wear full dentures or have a failing dentition may be candidates for implant-assisted treatment. Assessment may also show that a conventional denture, staged treatment, specialist care, or no implant surgery is more appropriate. Key considerations include:
Sufficient bone: Implants need a minimum amount of bone height and width to integrate. A CBCT scan (3D X-ray) taken at your implant consultation will show exactly what is available. If bone is insufficient, grafting may be an option.
Reasonable health: Implant surgery is a minor surgical procedure. Uncontrolled diabetes, certain blood disorders, or medications that severely impair healing may affect candidacy. Most chronic conditions are manageable with appropriate planning.
Commitment to maintenance: Implant-supported prostheses require ongoing home care and professional review at an interval set for individual risk. People who cannot maintain the prosthesis or attend reviews may face a higher complication risk.
Non-smoker or willing to stop: Smoking significantly increases implant failure risk. We strongly recommend stopping smoking before implant placement.

The Treatment Process
Consultation and Planning
A CBCT scan maps your bone in three dimensions. We assess bone volume, density, nerve positions, and sinus proximity. This scan determines how many implants your jaw can support and where they should be placed.
If you're currently wearing a denture, bring it to the consultation. We'll assess whether it can be adapted to fit on implants or whether a new prosthetic will be needed.
Implant Placement
Surgery is performed under local anaesthetic. For patients who are anxious, we can discuss management options at your consultation. (Note: Ivy Dental does not offer sedation dentistry.)
The implants are placed into the jaw bone using the planned surgical approach. Appointment length depends on the arch, implant count, extractions, grafting, access, guidance, medical considerations, and provisional plan; your clinician will provide a case-specific estimate.
Healing Period
Implants need time to integrate with bone. The review and loading timeline depends on stability, bone, healing, health, smoking, surgical complexity, and the proposed prosthesis.
During healing:
- Overdenture patients: An existing denture may sometimes be adjusted for healing, but this is decided after checking pressure, fit, and the surgical plan.
- Fixed bridge patients: A provisional bridge may be possible in selected cases; immediate loading is not guaranteed and an alternative provisional plan may be needed.
Final Prosthetic
Once the implants have integrated, the final denture or bridge is fabricated and fitted. For overdentures, the attachment components are placed on the implants and the denture is adapted to clip onto them. For fixed bridges, the final prosthetic is screwed into place.

Maintenance Requirements
All implant-supported prosthetics need professional maintenance:
- At your prescribed recall interval: Check the implants, tissues, hygiene access, prosthesis, bite, screws, and attachments
- When wear or loss of retention is detected: Adjust or replace attachment inserts or other components as clinically indicated
- For fixed bridges: Professional cleaning and any bridge removal follow the design, risk, access, and clinician's maintenance protocol rather than a universal annual schedule
At home, clean around the implant sites daily using an interdental brush, soft toothbrush, or water flosser. For overdentures, remove the prosthetic nightly and clean both the denture and the attachment housings.
Common Questions
Can my existing denture be used? Sometimes. If your current denture fits well and is in good condition, it may be possible to retrofit it with implant attachments. This reduces cost. We'll assess this at your consultation.
How many implants do I need? The number depends on the arch, bone, prosthetic design, opposing bite, risk factors, and whether the restoration is removable or fixed. A lower overdenture may sometimes use two implants, but more fixtures do not automatically guarantee a better outcome.
Does it hurt? Local anaesthetic is commonly used, but pain and recovery vary. Your clinician will explain the expected course and an appropriate pain-management plan based on your procedure and medical history. Contact the clinic if pain is severe, worsening, or outside the instructions provided.
How long do implant-supported dentures last? No component has a guaranteed lifespan. Implants, attachments, screws, acrylic, teeth, and bridge materials can require different maintenance, repair, or replacement at different times.
