Invisalign for Teens: Is It the Right Choice?

How Invisalign works for teenagers in Brisbane, compliance tips, cost, and when braces may be the better option.

Clear aligners are popular with teenagers for obvious reasons. They are less visible than metal braces, they are removable, and they do not restrict food choices. But popularity does not mean they are the right choice for every teen. Here is how to think about whether Invisalign makes sense for your teenager.

How Invisalign works for teenagers

The mechanics are the same as for adults. A series of clear, custom-made trays are worn sequentially, each one moving the teeth a small amount. Trays are changed every 1 to 2 weeks. Treatment involves wearing the aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush.

Invisalign offers a specific product line designed for teenagers. Invisalign Teen (now integrated into their standard system) includes features such as:

  • Compliance indicators. Small blue dots on the aligners that fade with wear. These help parents and dentists gauge whether the aligners are being worn enough.
  • Eruption tabs. Spaces built into the aligner design to accommodate teeth that have not fully erupted yet, such as second molars or canines.
  • Replacement aligners. A small number of replacement trays are included in case aligners are lost or damaged, which happens more frequently with younger patients.

When aligners work well for teens

Clear aligners can be effective for:

  • Mild to moderate crowding
  • Spacing between teeth
  • Some bite corrections (with the help of elastics)
  • Minor rotations and tipping movements
  • Cases where all or most permanent teeth have erupted

For many teenagers in Brisbane, the orthodontic issues fall within this range. A consultation with digital scanning can confirm whether aligners will achieve the desired outcome.

You can learn more about how aligners move teeth in our guide to the mechanics involved.

When braces may be the better option

There are situations where traditional braces are more effective, more predictable, or more practical:

Complex bite issues. Significant overbites, underbites, or crossbites often require mechanics that are more precisely controlled with brackets and wires. Aligners can address some bite problems, but braces remain the more versatile tool for complex cases.

Large tooth rotations. Rotating a tooth more than 20 degrees is difficult with aligners. Braces handle this movement more predictably.

Compliance concerns. This is the big one. Aligners only work when they are worn. If your teenager is likely to leave them out for extended periods, lose them frequently, or forget to put them back in after meals, the treatment will not progress as planned. Braces are fixed in place and work regardless of patient cooperation.

Missing or unerupted teeth. If several permanent teeth have not yet erupted, aligner treatment may need to wait, or braces may be better suited to managing the transition.

We have a detailed guide on when braces would be better than clear aligners that covers these considerations.

The compliance conversation

Compliance is the single biggest factor in teen aligner success. The aligners need to be in the mouth for 20 to 22 hours per day. That leaves 2 to 4 hours for meals and brushing.

In practice, this means:

  • The aligners go back in immediately after eating
  • Snacking between meals becomes inconvenient (the trays need to come out each time)
  • The aligners must be worn during school, sport, and social situations
  • Forgetting to bring the case or leaving aligners wrapped in a napkin at a cafe is a real risk

Some teenagers manage this well. Others find the discipline challenging. There is no judgement in this. It is a practical consideration that affects the outcome.

At Ivy Dental, we discuss compliance openly with both the teenager and the parent during the consultation. We would rather recommend braces upfront than start aligner treatment that stalls due to inconsistent wear. Our aligner compliance guide has practical tips for staying on track.

Sport and clear aligners

Teenagers involved in contact sport need to remove their aligners and wear a mouthguard during play. The aligners themselves do not provide protection against impact. This is the same as with braces, which also require a mouthguard.

For non-contact sport, aligners can typically remain in place during activity. They should not be worn with a mouthguard simultaneously.

If your teen plays a lot of sport, factor in the time the aligners will be out during training and games. The total daily wear time still needs to reach 20 to 22 hours.

Cost of Invisalign for teenagers in Brisbane

Clear aligner treatment at Ivy Dental starts from $6,500. The total cost depends on the complexity of the case and the expected treatment duration.

Health fund rebates may apply if your extras cover includes orthodontics. Orthodontic benefits often have lifetime limits rather than annual limits. Check with your fund before starting treatment.

Payment plans may be available to approved applicants. We also process claims on-site with HICAPS, so you pay the gap on the day of each appointment.

For patients aged 0 to 17, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule covers up to $1,158 in eligible dental services over two calendar years. Orthodontic treatment is not covered under the CDBS, but general checkups and preventive care may be.

The consultation process

At the initial appointment, we will:

  1. Examine your teenager's teeth and bite
  2. Take digital scans (no goopy impressions needed)
  3. Discuss the orthodontic issues and what outcomes are realistic
  4. Determine whether aligners or braces are the better option
  5. Provide a treatment plan with an itemised quote

We involve the teenager in the conversation. Understanding the commitment and the daily routine is important for a good outcome.

Book a teen clear aligner consultation

If your teenager is interested in straighter teeth, the first step is an assessment. We will be honest about whether aligners are the right fit and explain the alternatives if they are not.

Common questions

A few points patients often ask about.

These answers are general information. Your dentist can explain what applies after an assessment.

Can a 14 year old get Invisalign?

Yes, many teenagers from age 12 onward are candidates for Invisalign or clear aligners. Eligibility depends on whether all permanent teeth have erupted (or are close to erupting) and whether the orthodontic issue can be treated effectively with aligners. Your dentist will assess suitability at the consultation.

Is Invisalign more expensive than braces for teens?

Invisalign and braces are often comparable in cost for similar complexity cases. Clear aligner treatment at Ivy Dental starts from $6,500. The total cost depends on the complexity of the case and the treatment duration. Your dentist will provide an itemised quote after assessment.

What if my teenager does not wear their aligners enough?

Insufficient wear time is the most common reason aligner treatment takes longer than planned or does not achieve the expected result. Aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours per day. If compliance is a concern, your dentist may recommend traditional braces, which work regardless of patient cooperation.
