The first goal of an emergency dental appointment is to assess what is happening, relieve pain where possible, and stabilise the situation so it does not get worse. Depending on the problem, treatment may be completed on the same day or may require a follow-up once the acute issue is under control.
Here is what to expect at each stage.
What happens when you book or call
You can book an emergency appointment online at any time. During opening hours, you can also call for phone triage and booking help. We may ask what happened, where the pain is, whether there is swelling, and whether there has been trauma so we can understand the urgency and prepare for your visit.
If the situation is urgent (severe pain, swelling, knocked-out tooth, uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma), tell us when you book or call. Appointment timing depends on clinical urgency and clinic capacity, so same-day care is not guaranteed.
If the situation is uncomfortable but stable (a chipped tooth with no pain, a lost filling, mild sensitivity), we may book you in within a day or two depending on availability.
What happens at the appointment
The appointment typically follows this sequence:
Assessment. The dentist examines the area, asks about your symptoms and medical history, and takes X-rays or other imaging if needed. The goal is to identify the cause of the problem and the symptom pattern.
Pain management. If you are in pain, local anaesthesia is administered to make you comfortable before any further examination or treatment. The goal is to keep you as comfortable as possible during the appointment.
Diagnosis. Based on the clinical examination and imaging, the dentist explains what is happening, what the options are, and what is recommended.
Stabilisation. The immediate problem is addressed. This might mean draining an abscess, placing a temporary restoration, splinting a loose tooth, re-cementing a crown that has come off, or prescribing antibiotics if infection is present.
What may be done on the day
Many emergency issues can be resolved or significantly managed in a single visit:
- Temporary or permanent fillings for broken teeth
- Re-cementing crowns or bridges that have come loose
- Drainage of dental abscesses
- Splinting of displaced or loosened teeth after trauma
- Extraction of teeth that cannot be saved
- Prescription of antibiotics for infection
- Prescription of appropriate pain relief
How we decide what can be done today
Same-day treatment depends on the diagnosis, the time needed, your medical history, and whether the tooth can be stabilised safely in one visit. A temporary filling may be appropriate for a broken tooth, while a deep infection may need pain relief and drainage first, then definitive treatment after the acute symptoms settle.
This is why the emergency appointment starts with assessment rather than a promise of a specific procedure. The aim is to get you out of pain where possible, reduce immediate risk, and give you a plan that can be completed predictably.
What may need follow-up
Some situations require a second appointment after the acute issue is managed:
- Root canal treatment when the nerve is involved but the tooth is saveable
- Crown fabrication after a temporary restoration has been placed
- Implant planning after an extraction
- Review appointments to monitor healing after trauma
- Further imaging or specialist referral for complex cases
The emergency appointment addresses the immediate problem. The follow-up addresses the long-term solution.

How long the appointment typically takes
Most emergency dental appointments take 30 to 60 minutes. The assessment and imaging usually take 15 to 20 minutes. If treatment can be completed on the same day (such as a temporary filling, re-cementation, or drainage), the full visit may take up to an hour. More complex treatments that require a second appointment will be planned and scheduled before you leave.
What to expect for costs
Emergency examination fees start from $180 at Ivy Dental. The total cost depends on the treatment needed. We explain all costs before treatment begins. All major health funds are accepted with HICAPS on-site. For a detailed breakdown, see our guide on emergency dental costs in Brisbane. Payment plans may be available to approved applicants for larger follow-up treatments.
Indicative pricing. Your quote may differ based on clinical assessment.
What to bring or tell us
When you come in for an emergency appointment, it helps to have:
- Your Medicare card and health fund details (if applicable)
- Any medications you are currently taking
- Any relevant medical history (especially blood thinners, allergies, heart conditions, diabetes)
- If a tooth has been knocked out, bring the tooth in milk or saline
- If a crown or filling has come out, bring the piece with you
Tell us honestly about your pain level, when it started, and what makes it worse or better. This helps with diagnosis. If a tooth has been broken, bring any pieces with you.
