Booking a dental appointment is not complicated. But timing it well can mean the difference between a convenient slot that fits your schedule and a two-week wait for the one afternoon you can make.
Here are some practical tips on when and how to book a dental appointment in Brisbane to get the time you want with the least disruption to your day.
The easier days of the week
Not every day is equally busy at a dental practice.
Monday mornings are consistently one of the busiest periods. Weekend toothaches, emergencies, and patients who "just want to start the week right" all converge. If you are flexible, avoid Monday morning for routine appointments.
Friday afternoons are also popular. People try to squeeze appointments in before the weekend. The schedule can run behind by late Friday, meaning longer waits.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday tend to have the widest availability. These are the sweet spot for booking routine check-ups or consultations when you want a choice of times.
Weekends are ideal if you cannot take time off work. Ivy Dental is open seven days a week at our Everton Park and Nundah clinics. Saturday and Sunday appointments are available, but they do fill up. Book at least a week in advance for weekend slots.
Morning vs afternoon
Morning appointments (8am to 11am) have a practical advantage. The schedule is fresh, which means your appointment is more likely to start on time. If a procedure takes slightly longer than planned, there is buffer in the schedule to absorb it without pushing everything back.
For patients who feel anxious about dental visits, mornings are also worth considering. Booking an afternoon appointment means hours of anticipation. An early morning slot means you arrive, it is done, and the rest of your day is free.
Afternoon appointments (1pm to 4pm) work well for people who are not morning people or who have school-age children to drop off first. Mid-afternoon slots (around 2pm to 3pm) tend to have good availability on most days.
Late afternoon (4pm to 6pm) slots are popular with office workers and fill quickly. If you need a late appointment, book 2 to 3 weeks ahead.
When to book check-ups
The timing of your check-up relative to the calendar year can affect your finances.
January and February. If your health fund benefits reset on 1 January (most do), booking your first check-up in January or February means you are using this year's allocation early. You then have capacity for a second check-up in the second half of the year, both covered in the same benefits year.
November and December. These are the busiest months in dentistry. Patients rush to use remaining annual health fund benefits before the 31 December reset. Wait times are longer, appointment availability is tighter, and practices are under pressure. If you can, avoid the December rush by booking your second check-up in September or October.
End of financial year (June). Some patients with corporate health spending accounts or tax-deductible dental expenses want treatment completed by 30 June. This creates a smaller but noticeable spike in demand.

Tips to get the appointment time you want
Book your next appointment before you leave. At the end of every check-up, book your next six-monthly visit on the spot. You will have the widest selection of times, and it becomes one less thing to remember.
Be flexible on clinician. If you are happy to see any suitable dentist at the practice rather than requesting a specific clinician, more appointment times may be available. If continuity or a particular clinician matters to you, tell the team when booking.
Use online booking for routine appointments. Our online scheduling system shows real-time availability for check-ups and consultations. You can book at any hour without needing to call during office hours.
Call for complex treatment. If you need a longer appointment, such as for a crown, multiple fillings, or a veneer consultation, calling reception can help the team identify the appropriate appointment type and available time.
Booking for kids
Children's appointments work well in the morning when energy levels are highest. A tired child at 4pm is harder to examine than an engaged child at 9am.
School holidays are busy for kids' dentistry. If you want a holiday appointment, book at least 3 weeks in advance. Alternatively, before-school or after-school slots during term time avoid the holiday rush.
For families with multiple children, ask about back-to-back appointments so you can bring everyone in one trip.
Booking for nervous patients
If dental anxiety is a factor, here are a few booking tips that can help.
- Book the first appointment of the day. No waiting room time, no delays, no listening to the sound of other procedures.
- Let reception know about your anxiety when booking. We note it in your file so the clinician can adjust their approach.
- Avoid booking on days when you have other stressful commitments. Give yourself a clear schedule so the appointment is not competing with work pressure.
