Modern Dental Technology: What We Use and Why It Matters

Dental practices talk about technology a lot. Websites mention digital scanners, 3D imaging, and computer-guided procedures. But most patients do not know what these tools do or why they should care.

This guide explains the key technologies used at Ivy Dental in Brisbane. Not a sales pitch. Just a clear explanation of what each tool does, what it replaces, and how it affects your treatment experience.

Intraoral Digital Scanners

What it replaces: Traditional putty impressions (the trays filled with gooey material that you bite into and hold for several minutes).

What it does: A small handheld wand with a camera captures thousands of images of your teeth per second, building a precise 3D digital model on a screen in real time. The scan takes 2 to 5 minutes for a full arch.

Why it matters to you:

  • No gagging. Putty impressions trigger the gag reflex in many patients. Digital scanning does not.
  • Reviewable digital record. A scan creates a three-dimensional surface record that can be reviewed on screen and shared for planning crowns, veneers, and aligners where appropriate.
  • Faster turnaround. The digital file is sent directly to the lab or milling unit. No need to pour stone models or ship physical impressions.
  • You can see it. The 3D model appears on screen as the scan progresses. Your dentist can show you exactly what they see.

Digital scanners are used for most restorative and cosmetic work at Ivy Dental, including veneer preparation, crown fabrication, aligner treatment, and implant planning.

Digital X-Rays

What they replace: Traditional film X-rays.

What they do: Digital sensors capture X-ray images and display them instantly on a computer screen. The images can be enhanced, magnified, and compared side-by-side with previous images.

Why it matters to you:

  • Lower radiation. Digital X-rays use up to 80 percent less radiation than conventional film X-rays. The dose from a standard dental X-ray is already very low (comparable to a few hours of background radiation), and digital technology reduces it further.   • Instant results. No development time. Your dentist can review images immediately and discuss findings during the same appointment.
  • Better diagnostics. Digital images can be adjusted for brightness, contrast, and magnification, making it easier to detect early decay, bone loss, or other pathology.
  • Easy comparison. Images from different dates can be overlaid or displayed side-by-side to track changes over time.

CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography)

What it replaces: Medical CT scans for dental purposes, and guesswork in complex cases.

What it does: A CBCT scanner takes a cone-shaped beam of X-rays and rotates around your head in a single sweep (about 15 to 30 seconds). The data is reconstructed into a 3D image of your teeth, jaws, sinuses, and surrounding structures.

Why it matters to you:

  • Three-dimensional view. Standard dental X-rays are two-dimensional. A CBCT scan shows depth, width, and height, giving your dentist a complete picture of the anatomy.
  • Implant planning. CBCT scans can show bone dimensions and the position of structures such as nerves and sinuses when three-dimensional imaging is clinically indicated.
  • Complex cases. Impacted wisdom teeth, unusual root anatomy, jaw pathology, and airway assessment for dental sleep medicine all benefit from 3D imaging.
  • Lower dose than medical CT. A dental CBCT scan delivers significantly less radiation than a hospital CT scan, while providing the 3D information needed for dental treatment planning.

Not every patient needs a CBCT scan. It is used selectively for cases where 2D X-rays do not provide sufficient information.

Digital Smile Design

What it replaces: The guesswork in cosmetic treatment planning.

What it does: Using clinical photographs, digital scans, and specialised software, your dentist creates a visual preview of the planned cosmetic result. This preview can be shown to you on screen before any treatment begins.

Why it matters to you:

  • You see the plan before you commit. For veneers, bonding, or smile makeovers, the digital preview lets you evaluate and request changes before any tooth preparation occurs.
  • Better communication with the ceramist. The digital design is shared directly with the laboratory, so the ceramist knows exactly what shape, proportion, and alignment is planned.
  • Shared visual plan. The dentist, patient, and ceramist can discuss the same proposed design before treatment, while recognising that a preview is not a guarantee of the final result.

In-House Laboratory

What it replaces: External commercial dental laboratories with longer turnaround times and less direct communication.

What it does: An in-house dental lab means the ceramist who makes your crown, veneer, or bridge works in the same building as your dentist. They can consult directly, match shades in person, and make adjustments without shipping delays.

Why it matters to you:

  • Coordinated turnaround. An on-site lab can reduce transport and communication steps for selected work, although timing still depends on the case and production schedule.
  • Direct communication. Your dentist can walk to the lab and discuss your case with the ceramist face-to-face. Nuances of shade, translucency, and surface texture are easier to communicate in person than through written instructions.
  • Quality control. Your dentist can inspect the work at multiple stages of fabrication, requesting modifications before the final product is complete.

Magnification and Lighting

Less flashy than a digital scanner but equally important. Dental loupes (magnifying glasses worn by the clinician) and LED headlights allow the dentist to see fine detail that is not visible to the naked eye.

Why it matters to you:

  • Earlier detection. Small cracks, early decay at margins, and subtle colour changes are easier to spot under magnification.
  • More precise preparation. When placing a crown or veneer, the precision of the margin (where the restoration meets the tooth) determines how well it fits and how long it lasts. Magnification makes a measurable difference here.
  • Magnified working view. Adhesive procedures, including bonding veneers and placing composite fillings, are technique-sensitive. Magnification and controlled lighting help the clinician inspect the working field.

How Technology Affects Your Experience

A digital scan may replace a conventional impression in suitable cases; digital X-rays provide images for review; three-dimensional imaging is used selectively; and digital design can illustrate a proposed cosmetic plan. No technology removes clinical uncertainty or guarantees an outcome.

Technology does not replace clinical skill or judgement. The clinician still needs to decide whether a tool is indicated, interpret the information, explain its limits, and plan care for the individual patient.

Is dental technology safe?

Yes. The technologies used in modern dentistry, including digital X-rays, CBCT scans, and intraoral scanners, have been extensively tested and are considered safe for routine clinical use. Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays. Intraoral scanners use light, not radiation.

Why does dental technology matter to me as a patient?

Different tools provide different information. Digital scanners create three-dimensional surface records, digital X-rays provide radiographic images, and guided workflows can support planning for selected procedures. The benefit and limitations depend on the clinical situation.

Does advanced technology make dental treatment more expensive?

It depends on the procedure and what is included. Technology has purchase and operating costs, while some digital workflows may reduce particular steps. Ask for an itemised quote rather than assuming a tool will make treatment cheaper or more expensive.
