Adult Teeth Straightening Options: Aligners, Braces, Veneers

How adults compare clear aligners, orthodontic referral for fixed braces, veneers for cosmetic alignment, and combination plans.

You Did Not Miss Your Chance to Straighten Your Teeth

Many adults assume orthodontic treatment is something you either do as a teenager or not at all. That is not the case. Adult teeth straightening is common, effective, and more discreet than it used to be.

Whether your teeth have shifted over time, you skipped braces as a teenager, or a previous round of orthodontic work has relapsed, there are several proven options for adults in Brisbane.

This guide is an orientation page. It explains the main routes adults ask about, including aligners at Ivy Dental, fixed braces through orthodontic referral when needed, and veneers when the concern is cosmetic rather than tooth movement.

Option 1: Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are the most popular adult orthodontic option. They use a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays to move teeth gradually into alignment. Each set of trays is worn for one to two weeks before progressing to the next set.

How They Work

A digital scan of your teeth is used to create a 3D treatment plan showing the projected movement at each stage. The aligners are manufactured from this plan and delivered as a complete series. You wear them for 20 to 22 hours per day, removing them only to eat, drink (anything other than water), and brush.

Timeline

Most adult aligner cases take 6 to 18 months, depending on the complexity of the movement required. Mild crowding or spacing may be resolved in 6 to 9 months. More complex cases involving bite correction can take 12 to 18 months.

Cost

Clear aligners at Ivy Dental start from $6,500. The cost depends on the complexity and duration of treatment. For a full breakdown, see our aligner cost guide.

Who This Suits

Clear aligners work well for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and certain bite issues. They are discreet, removable, and do not require dietary restrictions. Compliance is essential. If you are unlikely to wear the trays consistently for 20+ hours per day, the results will be compromised.

For a comparison with traditional braces, see our guide on aligners vs braces.

Option 2: Fixed Braces

Fixed braces (brackets bonded to the teeth with an archwire) remain a versatile orthodontic option. They can treat a wider range of cases than aligners, including complex bite issues, severe crowding, and cases requiring significant tooth rotation.

Types of Fixed Braces

  • Metal braces. The traditional option. Effective and cost-efficient. More visible than other options.
  • Ceramic braces. Tooth-coloured brackets that are less noticeable than metal. The archwire may still be visible.
  • Lingual braces. Brackets placed on the inside surfaces of the teeth, making them invisible from the front. Less widely available and typically more expensive.

Timeline

Fixed braces typically take 12 to 24 months for adults. Complex cases may take longer.

Cost

Adult braces in Brisbane typically start from $6,000 to $9,000, depending on the type and complexity. Ceramic and lingual braces are generally more expensive than metal.

Who This Suits

Fixed braces suit adults with complex orthodontic needs that cannot be addressed with aligners alone. Ivy Dental does not present braces as an in-house substitute for aligners. If braces are the more appropriate option, we will explain the reason and discuss referral.

For guidance on when braces might be the better choice, see our guide on when braces are better than clear aligners.

Option 3: Porcelain Veneers (Cosmetic Straightening)

Veneers are not an orthodontic treatment. They do not move teeth. Instead, they change the appearance of teeth by covering the front surface with a thin layer of porcelain.

For patients with mild crowding, minor gaps, or slightly uneven teeth who want a faster cosmetic result, veneers can create the appearance of straighter teeth in as few as two to four appointments.

Timeline

Two to four weeks from consultation to final bonding, in most cases.

Cost

Porcelain veneers at Ivy Dental start from $1,200 per tooth. Most cosmetic veneer cases involve 4 to 8 teeth. A full smile makeover with veneers is a larger investment but provides changes to colour, shape, and alignment in a single treatment.

Who This Suits

Veneers suit adults who want a cosmetic improvement rather than functional orthodontic correction. They are ideal for minor alignment issues combined with other concerns like discolouration, chipping, or uneven tooth shapes.

Veneers are not appropriate for significant crowding, bite problems, or cases where teeth need to be physically moved. Your dentist will be honest about whether veneers or orthodontic treatment is the more appropriate path.

For a detailed comparison, see our guide on veneers vs aligners for crooked front teeth.

Option 4: Combination Treatment

Some cases benefit from a combination approach. For example, aligners to correct the position of the teeth, followed by veneers on a few front teeth to refine shape and colour. Or orthodontic treatment to correct the bite, followed by crowns or bonding to restore damaged teeth.

A comprehensive assessment allows your dentist to recommend the most efficient and effective treatment sequence.

How to Choose

The right option depends on several factors:

  • The severity of the misalignment. Mild cases have more options. Severe cases may require fixed braces.
  • Your timeline. Veneers are fastest. Aligners are moderate. Braces are longest.
  • Your budget. All options can be spread over time with payment plans available to approved applicants.
  • Your lifestyle. Aligners offer flexibility. Braces require less self-discipline. Veneers require the least lifestyle adjustment.
  • Your long-term goals. If your teeth are healthy but crooked, moving them orthodontically preserves natural tooth structure. If teeth are already damaged, worn, or discoloured, a restorative approach may address multiple problems at once.
